Apple has finally entered the foldable-phone market, introducing a radically different iPhone design built around a large internal display, new silicon and on-device AI.

For years, foldable smartphones have been one of the most visible experiments in mobile hardware.

Samsung established the category commercially. Google, Huawei, Motorola and other manufacturers followed with different interpretations of the concept.

Now Apple has entered the market.

On September 9, 2026, Apple unveiled iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone and one of the company’s biggest hardware changes in years. The device combines a compact outer display with a much larger foldable screen, while Apple has redesigned iOS around the new form factor. (Apple)

The launch places Apple directly into a category that has spent years developing outside the iPhone ecosystem.

A New Shape for the iPhone

The most obvious difference is the display.

When closed, iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display. When opened, it reveals a 7.6-inch inner display, giving the phone a substantially larger canvas for multitasking, gaming, video and productivity. (Apple)

Apple says the inner display is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display.

The two screens are designed around the same aspect ratio, allowing content to transition between the folded and unfolded states without dramatically changing its proportions.

That is important because foldable phones have historically faced a software problem as much as a hardware one.

A larger display is only useful if applications understand how to use it.

Apple Is Treating the Foldable as a Different Type of iPhone

Rather than simply placing a flexible screen inside an existing iPhone design, Apple has redesigned iOS 27 for Duo.

Applications can take advantage of the larger internal screen for multitasking and content consumption.

The device also supports Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, allowing users to interact with AI while working with information elsewhere on the screen. (Apple)

Apple’s approach reflects a broader change taking place throughout the smartphone industry.

AI is increasingly becoming part of the operating system rather than a standalone application.

A20 Pro Brings More Than Raw Performance

iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro processor.

The company says the chip is built on a 2-nanometer process and includes a dual 16-core Neural Engine designed to provide twice the compute power for on-device AI models. (Apple)

Apple also developed a custom vapor chamber and thermal system because the foldable design creates different heat-management requirements.

According to Apple, iPhone Duo delivers up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.

The combination of processor, cooling and display technology is important because foldables increasingly serve as miniature computers rather than simply larger phones.

The Camera Gets a Different Role

Foldable hardware also changes how people can use cameras.

When the phone is partially folded, it can effectively become its own stand.

When completely open, the larger screen provides more room for previewing and editing content.

Apple says the folding design enables camera experiences that aren’t possible on conventional iPhones. (Apple)

This could make foldables particularly attractive to content creators, travelers and users who frequently work with photographs and video.

Durability Remains a Critical Question

Foldable phones have always faced one fundamental challenge: a moving display is mechanically more complicated than a conventional smartphone.

Apple says iPhone Duo uses a precision hinge and a Grade 5 titanium construction.

The inner display also uses a nano-texture finish designed to reduce reflections and make the crease less visually noticeable. (Apple)

The company has therefore focused heavily on durability and engineering rather than treating the foldable purely as a design statement.

Apple Is Entering a Mature Foldable Market

The timing is significant.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series has already gone through multiple generations. Samsung’s 2026 lineup includes the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8. (Samsung Global Newsroom)

Samsung’s Fold8, for example, uses a 7.6-inch internal display and weighs 201 grams, while the Fold8 Ultra expands the internal screen to 8 inches. (Samsung Global Newsroom)

Apple is therefore entering an established market rather than creating the category itself.

Its challenge is to convince existing iPhone customers that folding technology adds enough value to justify changing the familiar iPhone experience.

A New Competition Around AI

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the iPhone Duo is that Apple is combining two hardware trends at once.

The first is foldable displays.

The second is AI.

Apple is positioning Duo as a device where the larger display, A20 Pro and Apple Intelligence work together.

That means the competition is no longer simply about who can build the thinnest or largest foldable.

It is increasingly about what the device can actually do with the additional screen.

The Bigger Picture

The arrival of iPhone Duo marks a significant moment for the smartphone industry.

Apple’s entry does not guarantee that foldables will replace conventional phones.

Instead, it gives the category one of the world’s largest mobile ecosystems and introduces a new competitive dynamic.

For consumers, the next phase of smartphone design may be less about making phones look different and more about finding new ways to combine portable hardware, large displays and increasingly capable on-device intelligence.
